#15 – I Get By With a Little Help From My Friends!

Joe Cocker – “With a Little Help From My Friends”

Monday, March 2 was my scheduled date for surgery. I was told not to eat anything other than clear liquids on the Saturday and Sunday before surgery, and the absolutely fabulous Golytley prep was to begin at 1:00 pm on Sunday. (which by the way…whoever decided to name the most horrible torture something like Golytely (pronounced “Go Lightly”) should be made to drink the 2 gallon jug often. It tastes like soap that they tried to add flavor to and does the exact opposite of making you go lightly. It is more like “Go like hell until your bum burns!”

YUCK!!!!

YUCK!!!!

Rick and I went out to a restaurant on Friday night (just him and I, no kids! Like a REAL date, holy cow!!!) for my last meal. (LOL….I know it sounds morbid, it was not intended as my last meal literally. I would not get to eat Saturday, Sunday, Monday and most likely not Tuesday either.) Anyway, I knew I would not be eating for a while, so I ordered myself a 14 oz ribeye steak, mashed potatoes and sweet carrots that were in brown sugar and butter. I ate the entire steak, all the potatoes and half of the carrots. Oh yea!!! I wanted major protein to hopefully get me through Saturday. On the way home, I decided that I wanted to pick up some lactose free ice cream because you cannot have a last meal without dessert…duh!

My sister had invited Rick, Wyatt, Callie and I over for dinner on Saturday, but then I found out I was not going to be able to eat that day so I asked if we could reschedule. She said that she couldn’t because she had to work late on Friday, but that we could still get together on Saturday and play games, and they could all have a small meal and snacks. It was going to be my mom, dad, my sister Becky, brother-in-law Curt, nieces Annika and Lily, my nephew Jacob, mother-in-law and father-in-law along with my family. We were supposed to be there at 5:00 pm. My sister texted me and suggested that we wear our Toilet Paper Princess shirts so we could get a family picture in them. Great idea I thought! (although I was thinking of wearing sweats but this was better!) Driving down their road, I noticed a lot of cars on the road…three houses down from my sister’s house, they were having a party. As we got closer, I noticed there were also a lot of cars in the road in front of their house…and in their driveway and yard. I looked at Rick, and said something like, um, this is more cars than I expected. I saw cars that belonged to friends and colleagues along with family members. That stinker! My little sis had thrown me a surprise party!

I walked in, and she was standing there with a camera and a big ol’ grin on her face! I was sent downstairs, where I was greeted by 30-40 friends and family members! I was so happy to see everyone! Becky said she had thrown me a “Love and Support” party to send me into my surgery knowing how many people are pulling for me. I am so very blessed to have such an amazing group of friends and family. I laughed until my stomach hurt, chatted with everyone, got teary eyed and had lots of jello and broth! I received meaningful gifts, like a purple quilt that my sister and dad made for me, framed signs from Sarah to decorate my hospital room, a painting of my favorite quote from Laura, a pair of handmade earrings and a bracelet from Anna and several other gifts! What a great night!

Your support system is necessary in your healing and daily life. Without the support and understanding of them, it is easy to feel abandoned and depressed. To those of you reading this that are not suffering with IBD, but are part of a support system for a loved one or friend, thank you for being so understanding. There are many times that we cannot help having to cancel plans, or rush out so that we can avoid an embarrassing situation. We may be fatigued at times, and look fine from the outside, but from the inside, we look completely different…more like a battlefield. To my friends and family, thank you for being part of the Toilet Paper Princess’s trusted court! Your love and support keep me positive and pushing forward! Love you!
